That’s how long it took for volunteers and organizers from the three Phoenix-area Dream Dinners stores to make a big difference in the lives of individuals in need, both in their own community and abroad.
Assembling an average of 33,000 meals per hour, more than 700 volunteers worked in one-hour shifts to assemble 100,224 food packages scientifically designed to reverse the effects of malnutrition and starvation. The packaged meals included rice, dehydrated vegetables, vitamins and proteins, and each package provides enough ingredients for six servings.
“Through this journey, we have experienced generosity from friends, families and strangers beyond comprehension,” said Laura Prefling, co-owner of the three Dream Dinners stores with her sister Sara GilBride. “It is a blessing and we are grateful.”
Organizers donated a third of the meals to St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance and to the Phoenix Rescue Mission, two local organizations serving men, women and children facing hunger and homelessness. The remaining meals were delivered to food-insecure communities in Haiti, a country still struggling from the devastation of Hurricane Matthew in 2016 and the earthquake nearly a decade before.
Key sponsors of the Dream Dinners Fight Against Hunger included Ryan Companies US, Inc.; and Sysco, who generously donated the 10,000 pounds of rice needed for all of the meals.
“It was an amazing day,” said GilBride. “It took an army of people and the army showed up and worked hard. We’re just so appreciative.”
